This is actually a museum detailing the various facets of Goan life through the ages.
It is spread over several acres near the Candolim beach, which is less than 2 Km from our beach resort. Calizz which means 'heart' in Konkani is a collection of artefacts
of the bygone era as well as life size models.
The tour of Calizz begins with the typical Catholic house of the Portuguese era complete with its Mangalore tiled roof.
The central theme revolves around the folklore of that era that if you
had three sons, you gave one to the society, one to God and one to the medical profession. The meaning of that being one lawyer,
one priest and one doctor. The lawyers room has a pile of books of yesteryears as well as pens, locks, ink bottles all of them from
the bygone era. The doctors room has old medical chests and surgical instruments used two centuries back.
The details in the Chapel present in the house is sure to strike you when you compare it with
a actual Chapel of similar vintage.
We then move to the Hindu house of the same era. The level of detail there is also very precise, upto the cow dung covered floor and the brass lamps.
There are lots of other things that you can see. There is also a restaurant that serves authentic Goan food.
View of Jack Sequeira Statue at Joao Hugo Eduardo de Sequeira (20 April 1915 – 17 October 1989), popularly known as Dr. Jack de Sequeira is well
known in Goa as the Father of the Opinion Poll. He was the founder president of the United Goans Party.
It is largely because of his efforts that the distinct identity of Goa is preserved. It was primarily because of his efforts
that the government of India held an opinion poll to decide the issue of the merger of Goa into the state of Maharashtra.
Calangute panchayat unveiled the statue of Dr. Jack Sequiera at Calangute junction to remember this great Goan personality
who paved the way for Goa to be the 25th state of India in 1987 and Goa's language Konkani to be recognised as one of the official languages of
India.
The inscription at the base of the statue reads " Known as the father of Opinion Poll and the first leader of the opposition of liberated Goa,
he fought against the merger of Goa into Maharastra and emerged victorious in the opinion poll of 1967, thus enabling Goa to maintain its identity ....".
