Shigmo or Shigmotsav is one of the most important Hindu festivals of Goa. It celebrates
the beginning of spring with plenty of colour, song and dance. Sometime during the sixties, the celebration of Shigmo
got a boost when the Tourisn Department started the Shigmo float parade similar to the Carnival floats. The float parade takes place in all major towns of Goa on different days. Traditional folk dancers accompany the
floats which depict Hindu mythological and religious scenes.
The Shigmo celebrations takes place in different
parts of Goa on different days and continue for a fortnight. The celebrations of Shigmo have grown in stature over the years
and has a large following all over the state. The huge floats depicting mythological events as well as folk dances make it feature
on the itinerary of several culturally inclined tourists.
