Churches of Goa

   Besides the Churches at Old Goa which have been declared world heritage monuments, Goa has several other churches which provide fine examples of architecture of a bygone era.

The Church of Mae de Deus at Saligao

   This church is a fine example of gothic architecture, and is the only one of its type in Goa. . It is located amidst picturesque surroundings at Saligao in Bardez taluka in North Goa. The 135 year old church is sure to catch your attention as you go along the CHOGM road to Calangute.It enshrines the statue of Mae de Deus the literal translation of which is Mother of God. The statue was transferred to Saligao church from the ruins of the convent at Old Goa. This Church is illuminated at night throught the holiday season.

Reis Magos Church at Verem

   This Church is one of the oldest Churches in Goa, being constructed in 1955. It is dedicated to the three Magi kings Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar who came to adore Infant Jesus in the Manger.

Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception at Panjim

  The Church is dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Imaculada Conceicao or Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. It was built in 1541, when Panjim was still a fishing village. It is located in the heart of Panjim.
   The Church which is built in the Renaissance style has four altars, besides the main altar. The present big bell of the Panjim church is the second biggest in Goa, next only to the so-called Golden Bell at the Se Cathedral at Old Goa.

Church of St. Anne, Talaulim

   This church is situated amidst the hills of Santana in Talaulim. The Church of Anne, declared a "national monument" during the Portuguese era, largely continues to remain forsaken today to the ravages of time. It is a remarkable piece of Renaissance architecture.
   Construction of the original Church of St. Anne began in 1577. The present Church was rebuilt and extended in 1695, when the church was elevated to the status of a parish. It is 110 feet in height 147 feet in length and 105 feet in breadth. Today, parts the structure are in a precarious condition.

Church of St. Anthony at Siolim

   The Church of St. Anthony at Marna, Siolim is another example of Portuguese era architecture. The church was built in 1630.

Our Lady of Hope Church at Chinchinim

   The Original church of Chinchinim was built by the Jesuits in 1590 and was dedicated to St. Anne. The present Church dedicated to our Lady of Hope was built in 1627.

Other Important Churches

   The other important churches in Goa include the Our Lady of Miracles church in Mapusa, the Tivim church dedicated to St. Christopher and St. Andrew's Church at Goa Velha to mention a few
