Temples of Goa

   The temples in Goa are built in an architechtural style that is different from the rest of India. Below is a list along with a brief description of some of the important temples of Goa.

Shri Bhagavathi Temple at Pernem

  This Temple is said to be more than 500 years old. Life size statues of elephants carved out of blackstone welcome you at the entrance. In the temple you can see the Eight armed Goddess Bhagavathi Ashtabhuja in a standing position on a pedestal. Huge crowds ofdevotees gather here during Dussehara celebrations.

Mangueshi Temple

   This temple is a must visit for tourists. This temple is more than 400 years old. The multi-storied lamp tower which is landmark of the surrounding area is a highlight of this temple. The deity was shifted here from its original location in Salcette taluka in south Goa.

Shantadurga Temple

   This temple is located at Kavlem in Ponda taluka and is dedicated to Shantadurga, the godess of peace. Shanta Durga is the Goddess who mediates between Vishnu and Shiva.

Temple of Shri Mahadeva at Tambdi Surla

   The Temple of Shri Mahadeva at Tambdi Surla is 64 kms away from Calangute. The Temple built in the Kadamba style architecture is the only one of its kind found in Goa.

Shri Shanta Durga (Kunkoleimkarin)

   This temple lies 54 Kms from Panjim. The Godess was shifted to Fatorpa, from her original home in Cuncolim village because of religious persecution by the Portuguese. Thosands of devotees flock to the temple for the annual Zatra which is more well known as the Fatorpa Zatra.

Brahma Temple at Carambolim, Satari

   Located at 7 kms from Valpoi the capital of Sattari Taluka in North Goa. It is One of the few Brahma Temples in India and belongs to the 5th century A.D.
